Bible Verse (NKJV)

“I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.”

— Psalm 121:1–2 (NKJV)

Introduction

Life often brings challenges, uncertainties, and moments when we feel helpless. During such times, people may look for strength in human wisdom, wealth, or earthly resources. Psalm 121:1–2 reminds believers that true help does not ultimately come from people or circumstances, but from the LORD, the Creator of heaven and earth. This passage encourages us to place our complete confidence in God, who is always able to help His people.

Historical Background

Psalm 121 is one of the Songs of Ascents (Psalms 120–134). These psalms were sung by the Israelites as they journeyed to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. Traveling through mountains and difficult terrain could be dangerous because of robbers, wild animals, and harsh conditions. As they traveled, God’s people confessed that their true security and help came not from the mountains themselves, but from the LORD who created them.

Verse Explanation

“I will lift up my eyes to the hills”

The psalmist looks toward the surrounding hills during his journey. The hills remind him of both the difficulties before him and the greatness of the God who created them.

“From whence comes my help?”

This question directs the believer to consider the true source of help. Human strength is limited, but God’s power has no limits.

“My help comes from the LORD”

The answer is clear and confident. The believer’s help comes from the LORD alone. God is faithful to provide wisdom, strength, protection, comfort, and guidance according to His perfect will.

“Who made heaven and earth”

God’s ability to help is based on who He is. As the Creator of heaven and earth, nothing is too difficult for Him. His unlimited power gives believers confidence to trust Him in every circumstance.
